We are in the Columbus airport, getting ready to get on our flight. The Columbus Crew soccer team is sitting by us. A fitting way to transition into Europe. A mixture of excitement and nervousness is within us, but mostly excitement. Goodbye United States. Hello world.

Driving through the American West

We have been on the road for 2 days now, headed east to Ohio where Christy and I grew up.

The first day of driving lead us across California where we camped in Tahoe National Forest. We were not near Lake Tahoe, but we were next to Lake Boca, a beautiful alpine lake. We got a later start than expected so it got dark while we were driving. Despite the darkness we could see snow on the Sierra Nevada mountains as we drove by. When we got to camp it was a little chilly, but I prefer camping with a little chill so I can get into the sleeping bag. As the night went on it got colder and colder. I put my coat on our dog Homer to keep him warm. Within our sleeping bags it was warm enough, but we could tell it was getting colder and colder throughout the night. When we woke up at sunrise I was surprised to find our tent covered in frost. It was so cold we decided to skip sleeping in and get on the road as quickly as possible. The scenery was beautiful, but we were too cold to enjoy it.

Lesson #2: Be prepared for unexpected weather conditions

The second day of driving we went across Nevada and Utah. We were supposed to camp outside of Salt Lake City, but after the cold night in the Sierra Nevada mountains we decided not to camp. Fortunately, we got a room at the Motel 6 in Evanston, WY that was dog friendly. When we woke up in the morning we were really glad we did not camp. Our car was covered in snow.

Today we will drive across Wyoming and Nebraska. Hopefully we will get some warmer weather for camping, but I have never seen snow in May before, so it is kind of fun.

Our Adventure Begins!

Goodbye, San Francisco. Hello, World.

Christy and I officially started our trip on Thursday, May 20th. After many busy days of cleaning, packing, and goodbyes we finally made it to the road. Our 2 door Honda Civic was packed full with all of our possessions. We sold or donated the rest of our stuff.

We headed east toward Ohio, where we will visit friends and family before flying to London on May 31st. As we drove over the Bay Bridge we learned our first lesson of the trip:

Lesson #1: Keep the camera accessible.

Our camera was packed in a bag out of reach. Without the camera, we had to hope the emotions and images of the moment would be permanently saved in our memories. As the skyline faded from the rear view mirror we focused our attention forward to the journey ahead of us.
