I thought I would take some time to answer a few questions that we are asked frequently.

1.) How can you afford this?

Aaron and I have been saving up for this for years, ever since college. We have been very careful in the ways we have spent our money. I do not buy clothes, or have my hair cut by an expensive stylist. We do not decorate our apartment, and we have not been on an expensive vacation since we have been married. We do not rent out really nice apartments, and we do not have car loans. It is amazing how much money you can save by simply living below your means.

2.) What about Homer?

My parents have generously offered to take Homer in for the year. We did some research on taking Homer with us, but it is just not going to happen. If we were to take Homer into certain countries (England for example) he would have to stay there for 6 months.

When the Dumfords need a Homer break, the Williams will step in. We are very lucky to have such supportive parents.

3.) Where will you stay on your trip?

We will be staying in hostels most of the time, however, we are active users of couchsurfing.com. We have found this is the best way to travel, because not only do you make great new friends all over the world, but you also get to see the area you are visiting from a local’s perspective.

We also ended up camping all through Africa. Our gear was provided by African Trails, the overland tour company we traveled to Johannesburg with.

We plan on camping in Australia, as hostels are so expensive. We are going to rent a car and buy a cheap tent from a local K-Mart.

4.) If you could recommend one country to visit, which one would you choose?

Namibia.

5.) What will you do after the trip?

This is by far our most frequently asked question, and a good one at that. The truth is, we don’t know. Your guess is as good as ours.
